Short Course Description
Faced with endless health, security, consumer and environmental risks, how should societies respond? This seminar studies the regulation of a wide array of risks, such as pandemics, food, drugs, medical care, biodiversity loss, emerging technologies, and extreme catastrophic risks.
The seminar focuses on how regulatory institutions deal with challenges in risk assessment (scientific uncertainties, technical gaps), risk perceptions (public concerns), risk management (precaution vs cost-benefit analysis). It examines risk regulation strategies, such as incremental, adaptive, governmental, self-regulation, and international cooperation.
Students' responsibilities in this seminar include active participation in class discussions, and writing a policy/research paper.
