Short Course Description

This course will examine the processes of nation-building following genocide. Our case-study will be Rwanda, were genocide that occurred in 1994 influenced post-genocidal nation-building processes. During the course, we will analyze various processes that relate to nation-building, such as memorialization of the genocide, reconciliation processes, structuring of ethnic and religious identities, education systems, and others. The case of Rwanda will be examined in the context of other cases of genocide and nation-building in the Middle East and Africa, such as the cases of the Armenians in Turkey and the Darfurians in Sudan.
