Short Course Description
In a world where the line between profit and purpose is increasingly blurred, the role of social business entrepreneurship has never been more critical. This course offers an in-depth exploration of how businesses can drive social change while remaining financially viable. Over seven sessions, students will delve into the complex yet fascinating realm of social business, where the goal is not only to generate profit but also to address some of the world?s most pressing social challenges.
We will begin by tackling the fundamental question: Is it possible, or even desirable, to blend business with social impact? We?ll explore this debate through the lens of Milton Friedman?s influential theory on the social responsibility of business. From there, we?ll journey through the history of social business, examining key milestones, models, and the evolution of concepts such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, and Muhammad Yunus?s pioneering work in social business.
The course will equip students with practical tools and frameworks, such as the Social Canvas and Social GAP approach, to foster creativity and innovation in social entrepreneurship. We?ll address the unique challenges of funding and sustaining social businesses, offering strategies to balance financial goals with social impact.
Students will engage in workshops, case studies, and discussions, culminating in a group project where they will develop and present a comprehensive plan for a new social business. This project, along with individual assignments, will provide hands-on experience in ideation, impact measurement, and the practicalities of launching and managing a social enterprise.
By the end of this course, students will not only have a solid understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of social business entrepreneurship but also the practical skills needed to turn their social business ideas into reality. Whether you aim to start your own social enterprise or work within an organization that values social impact, this course will provide the insights and tools necessary to make a meaningful difference in the world through business.
