Short Course Description

We will start the course by broadening the basics optical principles to describe complex optical behaviors; among them, the reason for the relation between the color of light and its speed, deriving the speed of light from fundamental constants related to electro- and magneto-statics, as well as the influence of a variety of parameters on interference.
We will then use the principles mentioned above to design and optimize optical apparatuses that contain lenses, phase modulators, etc.
Near the end of the course, we will review a series of experiments in modern optics. In detail, we will study holography, optical tweezing, and gravitational wave detectors.
By the end of the course, the students will know to design and build an optical system such as holograms, frequency-locked lasers, and optical tweezers.
