Short Course Description

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to insects in their natural habitats in Israel through two 2-day field excursions. The first excursion will take place in the coastal plain and Negev desert, and the second excursion will be in the Galilee and the Golan Heights. In each excursion, we will visit several sites in order to see a diversity of insects and understand their adaptations to their habitats (forest, steppe, aquatic habitats, sand dunes etc.), learn about different aspects of their life history, introduce the dominant orders, families and species in Israel, and demonstrate different collecting methods. During the excursions, we will catch insects for presentation and explanation and then release them in the field. In preparation for the excursions, an introductory presentation will be held at the beginning of the semester. Participation in this meeting and in all four excursion days is compulsory. The grade will be based on a final exam.
Previous or concurrent participation in the "World of Insects" course is a prerequisite for this course.
