Short Course Description

Prerequisites: Physiology course 0455-2552

Duties:
80% attendance at lectures, and a concluding lecture by the students in pairs in which they will present a project or research related to microalgae.

The course's goal:
Acquiring basic knowledge in the taxonomy of algae, recognition of physiological and biochemical processes of algae and their assimilation into biotechnological approaches to research and application, while recognizing the potential and difficulties in the field, starting from developing systems for growing algae, through the production of unique natural materials and genetic manipulations to utilization for bioenergy needs.

Industrial production of algae, photobioreactors. Algae as a source of biochemicals, food additives and alternative energy. Molecular approaches in algae biotechnology.
The lectures will be given face-to-face. Demonstrations will also be held

Introduction and taxonomy of microalgae
Microalgae cultivation and collection systems including use as biofilters
Genetic engineering and metabolomics of microalgae
Bioenergy and photosynthesis of microalgae
Natural and biorefinery materials of algae
Production and production of bio-fuels, bio-diesel and bio-hydrogen from microalgae
