Short Course Description
This course is given in the international Masters program in the School of Public Health, Department of Emergency Management. The course combines the topics of climate change and natural disasters with public health. The course starts with an introduction to natural disasters, climate change, risk assessment, and early warning systems, followed by a more in depth focus in specific natural hazards related to weather and climate (tropical storms, flooding and severe weather, droughts and heat waves, wildfires, etc.) The students will also be part of a risk assessment "simulation" of a flood event during the course. Towards the end of the course we will also discuss solutions to the climate crisis and how to mitigate climate change. There will be weekly readings assigned to the students with questions on the readings in the final exam. In addition to the final exam students will make a TED talk presentation in the last weeks of the course.
